I've always been told its to help find my body if I slip or to be more visible in general, still hate it.

i used to favor more neutral colors, and still wear lots of gray/black/white, but the brighter colors have grown on me, i will definitely style with bolder colors or patterns from time to time...though seems they all get covered with mud at some point anyway...

Check out Burton for both categories, I think they really nail the colours / patterns of their designs. I was researching backpacks a few months ago and they ended up being the only contender. (And to clarify: I have nothing to gain by saying this, I just like their stuff.)
