esp image search — google image search does no cv, results are based on surrounding text. the “unprofessional hairstyle” pics are mostly from articles calling out workplaces for bad policies on black hairstyles. it’s true that it’s a data skew reflective of a racist world
but the intention of search is to give you the results for what you queried. i think there is an unsolved problem with how google pulls images for query x from a page using the image as a counterexample to x and then presents that image without context but that’s not a bias issue
search is at least a direct path to the underlying data. what should be far more concerning is when data skews are hidden under many layers of opaque logic and then the result is presented as truth — eg the google photos gorilla incident, algorithmic bail systems, facial rec
