esp image search — google image search does no cv, results are based on surrounding text. the “unprofessional hairstyle” pics are mostly from articles calling out workplaces for bad policies on black hairstyles. it’s true that it’s a data skew reflective of a racist world

but the intention of search is to give you the results for what you queried. i think there is an unsolved problem with how google pulls images for query x from a page using the image as a counterexample to x and then presents that image without context but that’s not a bias issue

search is at least a direct path to the underlying data. what should be far more concerning is when data skews are hidden under many layers of opaque logic and then the result is presented as truth — eg the google photos gorilla incident, algorithmic bail systems, facial rec

anyways at the end of the day i am nitpicking an issue of search-type problems vs classification-type problems while it’s still true the world is racist and it’s still true that what really matters is end user perception https://twitter.com/theophite/status/1269757765657833474?s=21 …https://twitter.com/Theophite/status/1269757765657833474 …

as someone who works on this issue (i'm the privacy lead for ML fairness @ GOOG), i don't think it's a bad example. i don't know that we need to be as concerned with mechanisms which extremely sophisticated users can divine as the message unsophisticated users take.

def a problem and i agree it’s the perception that ultimately matters but my take on it is that it’s more a context & presentation issue. i don’t really see a way to “fix” the perceived bias here without like, case by case manual intervention https://twitter.com/isosteph/status/1269757094397243394?s=21 …https://twitter.com/isosteph/status/1269757094397243394 …

currently waiting for my copy of Algorithms of Oppression by
@safiyanoble , might be worth checking out if you want to read more on this issue. also quite timely -
If you liked that book I would also recommend Technically Wrong by Sara Wachter-Boettcher!

Its surely an unfidable problem from Google's end? There will be countless examples of racist attitudes manifesting into algorithms they can't manually change them all, if any

Yup. Just like tear gassing protestors, skewing the search algorithm or manually editoring search result does not fix the underlying issues. It just hides them under the rug.
