i am not sure if getting rid of sat/act is unambiguously good or bad like most things there are lots of factors but it’s embarrassingly clear how much most tech adjacent ppl’s takes on this take the hyper competitive bay area style extracurriculars rat race for granted lol

I agree that there's some solipsism to these takes. The SAT is super unfair and tilted towards people who went to fancy schools where they learned all those vocab words. And also: would you argue intuitively that essays are or even *could be* more fair?

I grew up poor & did not have time (work) or access to ECs. I would not have gotten into great college if I had to compete in an EC arms race. Besides EC, you are left with network, donation, GPA, SAT. GPA incidentally also involves tests & benefits from tutors or private school.

Maybe less “fair” for admittance into Berkeley, the mis-sorted individuals will have to endure the indignities of (checks notes) UCSC. Terrible, terrible, amirite?

“it’s an even playing field because everyone is so competitive” is another good one

yes, but the ones who do default to that are the ones that get in. And that's the point of the essay.
