maybe i am dumb & naive but it bothers me that most criticisms of "the media class" here show no interest in the question of how do we actually build good lasting accountable media institutions relevant to a wide audience and basically end up at "at least i have stuff for Me"

like it's mostly valid i too am tired of hearing a bunch of new york writers talk among themselves and class & accessibility critiques are absolutely accurate but the predominant attitude on here across a wide variety of political stances is tear it all down with no replacement

saw a thread from some tech guy today that basically went "i love that journalists are increasingly irrelevant, now i can just have my pr team shape the narrative" and it was like damn u really said that out loud. but similar sentiment in lots of places

social media moves too fast and has few accountability mechanisms beyond mobbing ppl, there's immense skill & value in finding news & reporting it well & editing & factchecking. i think it's true a lot of editors these days suck but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have editors

yes! + every media critique thread ends w. sv ppl pitching crowdfunding/patron models, which might fit some cases (if practicable) but ignore work requiring institutional support for litigation/fact checking/etc. only a handful of newsrooms guarantee writers legal help if needed.

where "legal help" includes appealing + litigating FOIA denials, contesting *criminal* charges for engaging in common newsgathering practices (like ag-gag laws), any First Am right of access suits, and run-of-the-mill libel/defamation/copyright issues.

ur so right i always forget the legal issues although i didn't realize most newsrooms didn't even do that much the thing that scares me is it's all been dying for so long lots of writers are fully turning to the crowdfunding model bc it really does feel like the only thing left
