maybe i am dumb & naive but it bothers me that most criticisms of "the media class" here show no interest in the question of how do we actually build good lasting accountable media institutions relevant to a wide audience and basically end up at "at least i have stuff for Me"

It feels like many think the replacement is......here?

social media moves too fast and has few accountability mechanisms beyond mobbing ppl, there's immense skill & value in finding news & reporting it well & editing & factchecking. i think it's true a lot of editors these days suck but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have editors

There is a lot of precedent around public access and publicly funded media outside of the states (specifically Canada, Europe, etc.) They have their own problems, but the solution is generally: increase access and invest in reach. (I worked in public radio for a while before.)
-
By “invest in access” I mean specifically: fund public studios and spaces (s.g. libraries) to support people and orgs creating their own media. And by investing in reach I mean: giving them space (tv channels, radio bands, domains and live stream infra) and also promotion.

Likely result of how the current administration is playing the media and how media seems to be incapable sorting what’s important and what’s an obvious trap set by Trump.
