I cringe to even ask this but why do we tip doordash delivery people but not fedex delivery people?

the margins are way higher on package delivery vs food for obvious reasons, also this isn’t true for fedex but a good chunk of ups drivers are unionized also you tip bc a food delivery driver is providing a service pretty much specifically for you vs driving a route

I actually read a few papers on tipping economics in college back in the day—the general consensus seems to be that tipping norms are very socially path dependent. It’s why amounts and norms vary so much by area, not really tied to cost of living differences
