this is also a good & interesting angle, personally i hate the "8 hour workday" i would much rather have a mixed day of work time blended with social time & time to myself but as in other cases the relaxing of boundaries can get messy and do you trust employers to not abuse ithttps://twitter.com/sovietmoonbase/status/1260656284224720896 …

The older I get (kids, etc) the more important it's become to have blocks of time where I'm not expected to answer work stuff. The other side of that is that my coworkers want me to be consistently available during the other times which makes the blended time thing hard.
-
kids are interesting bc the standard workday obviously lines up w the school day but i feel like eg in summer it'd be cool to have more flexible hours to hang out w your kids during the day and not be forced to find all day camps for childcare

I personally like the structure because it makes things more tangible which leads to baseline expectations (e.g. 8 hour workday, 40 hours a week). One positive from this would be to make those more negotiable (what hours? what days?) but I'm scared that ambiguity will get abused.
-
That ambiguity could exacerbate inequality both within *and* between companies. There's a lot of talk in academic circles about how this crisis is widening gaps between men and women, parents and non-parents. Looser schedules in private sector likely would lead to the same

I appreciate the fluidity. I can work on something until I’m bored, go get groceries, call a friend, play a game, and come back to it. I think it maximizes efficiency across those work/life boundaries

I think it works in college because there is only so much the classes require you to learn. At a job there is effectively infinite work to be done. I don't trust the average business to not push for more and more

Totally, it gets a tad more difficult when one of those parts tries grows to as much share as possible. That's when some (arbitrary? Artificial?) Limits need to come into play

As an "old", some of the best creative output has been at blended workplaces. It's a wonderful way to foster creative energy. (says the white guy) I might need to take care of the kids during the day but I'm excited to spent ambient time thinking about a problem all weekend.

Agree. There’s also lots of work-adjacent stuff I wanna do that I would not consider “life” or “play” such as spending hours fucking around with my dotfiles lol
