when it comes to race & ethnicity europeans are obsessed with thinking they're "better at it" than americans but the fact of the matter is if you're not white you'll hear stuff like "ok but what Are you" far more in europe than pretty much anywhere in the united stateshttps://twitter.com/vlad_x2/status/1259388441520898049 …

On the contrary, we tell Americans that they’re not Chinese, Italian or German – they’re American

not all of it is "racist" per se in that europe does just have fundamentally different ideas of race/ethnicity/nationality but it's annoying when europeans won't shut up abt how perfect they are when i can't walk around any fucking city without hearing "china" several times a day

Well depending from who it's coming from, it could be a conversation starter. I find roots REALLY interesting. Also, it immediately helps with do's and don'ts. It's somewhat part of the Package. I will admit asking for ROOTS is probably nurtured.

mostly comes down to a disconnect where nonamericans have a poor understanding of the history of race in america. in general if someone says they are american i would not ask further about their "roots" unless they volunteer that info

I was on an esports team that traveled to Germany for competition. When we left, I was the only one pulled over by customs to be questioned, while holding a literal big prize check. Only Asian, everyone else white.

It's not purely european. It's just all countries which doesn't have a history based on immigration. I lived in Asia for very long time, i'm French but nobody believed it there. I was Indian for them and that's it.

People in Europe are just as racist if not more, but it's more "quiet" racism here so people pat themselves on the back because they do not see it themselves.

It's weird - people here ask "but what are you" all the time but also say things like "oh so you're not actually Chinese/Japanese/Korean etc" if you don't speak the language or grew up too "white"
