wish ppl realized "gifted kid burnout" isnt "wah ppl arent saying im smart anymore" its "ive had my entire sense of self-worth propped up on being nebulously Intelligent & now that i have to apply real-world skills nobody bothered to teach me, ive realized it's easier to not try"

i think it's far more interesting to ask what might be other reasons a whole generation of ppl feel burned out & somewhat purposeless, and why we let them all believe it's bc their mom called them smart once

My two least favorite Twitter things are gifted kid and "Asians who absorbed other cultures because they sought social validation are BAD and I am MORE ENLIGHTENED" discourse

It is eery. always exculpatory, never reflective.

i just don't get why everything always has to come down to the same thing! like everything in the thread — it's not bad that your parents called you smart, parent-child relationships do naturally change, have you considered literally any other causes

Capitalism (‘flexible’ work, consumer culture, glorification of the hustle) and therapy culture where suffering/pain is subject to treatment rather than embraced

I do think reducing that discussion down to “being called smart” often is problematic, but the whole performance of calling kids smart overall is still not the best move imo

I don’t think that’s possible in the US. I think you would need to live somewhere with a higher floor. A lack of significant commercial success in the US generally = misery and insecurity.
