i know in reporting for the public it makes more sense to call tim bray a vp but it’s both more significant and also less unexpected that he’s a distinguished engineer

I think in a lot of other industries it's not really possible for an IC to have the same level as an executive so it might not be immediately obvious to most people how important this guy was.

yeah i totally get why they say vp it's just that vp implies an exec who's in that role because of business alignment which would be more surprising of a "morals" departure, vs those with engineering clout (who've been the ones leaving already at google etc)
