and when said young children leave for college they keep in touch with their parents by texting in english, but like now it doesn't feel like their parents because it's english

when i was growing up they’d told people it would confuse us too much if they spoke to us in a different language from school so at around 5 years old my parents hard switched from Dutch to English, and I never got to learn Bahasa... they reserved that to discuss secret stuff

Disagree. Parents spoke to me in English and enforced that I also know the local language of the state we lived in (in India). Ethnic language was different. I'm thankful to them

i agree with you. my folks forced themselves to speak broken english to me growing up. sad thing now is that there’s a significant language barrier when either of us need to express certain complex ideas.
