i think this is a common immigrant cultural sentiment but it’s very odd to me to watch parents speak to their young children in english regardless of ethnicity......all families should have their own language english is for the public sphere

Does this apply to dogs too? (People speaking to their dogs not dogs speaking to their young children)

when i was growing up they’d told people it would confuse us too much if they spoke to us in a different language from school so at around 5 years old my parents hard switched from Dutch to English, and I never got to learn Bahasa... they reserved that to discuss secret stuff

Disagree. Parents spoke to me in English and enforced that I also know the local language of the state we lived in (in India). Ethnic language was different. I'm thankful to them

i agree with you. my folks forced themselves to speak broken english to me growing up. sad thing now is that there’s a significant language barrier when either of us need to express certain complex ideas.
