one of my most closely held but mostly inconsequential opinions is that socks should function almost exclusively as shoe liners and should basically never be worn indoors

I like many of your takes. But this is just wrong. Socks are always footliners. They should worn almost all times except sleeping unless you have truly pristine floors.
