the push to make machine learning accessible is gonna ruin us all like maybe this is elitist idk but ml even more than regular stats sits at this intersection of “is actually fairly complex but produces simple results” and giving ppl tools w/o understanding is just irresponsible

mainstream media is complicit in this too like. put a headline up stating this guy’s results as “hard data” and then giving him an entire unchecked interview to spew bullshit are you kidding mehttps://www.salon.com/2020/03/09/there-is-hard-data-that-shows-bernie-bros-are-a-myth/ …

I am obviously not neutral on this issue, but someone I work with frames this kind of argument you’re making as like abstinence-only sex ed. Sadly it does not reduce harm and instead we should be teaching/building tools for SAFE STATS.

same as journalism vs social media, except you can hide your bias in the "algorithm". Imo it'll be saved by the amount of data needed, individuals don't have private datasets large enough to make a useful model, can be proven wrong if using public datasets.

KPIs have long been used to ignore outcomes, ml gives those practitioners the appearance of even less autonomy over that info. that’s why it’s disturbing to me
