absolutely terrified by the tendency of some of my friends to fluidly make and unmake group chats with constantly changing, slightly different but overlapping subsets of the same 8-9 people it's impossibly chaotic

the thing with group chats is they start out as consequential (we're going to an event! make a chat) but become architectural (this is The Chat) and i feel like this dynamic is hugely important and i can't think of any pre-internet analog but nobody ever talks about it

I was thinking about this the other day in the context of etiquette (adding someone without group consent, etc) and events that overlap but not perfectly with the core group

yes! it's so fucking weird lmao i wish ephemeral/event-expiring group chats were a bigger thing i feel like having a more flexible structure as a default would help this a lot

And some event planning plugins (G sheets always get made, Venmo’s requested) - if iOS or Android pulled the pieces together it would stake a major claim as the next ‘social network’

yeah i mean at the end of the day nobody's gonna build it in a way that works bc nobody's figured out how (and there might not be a way at all) to monetize natural social dynamics lol
