absolutely terrified by the tendency of some of my friends to fluidly make and unmake group chats with constantly changing, slightly different but overlapping subsets of the same 8-9 people it's impossibly chaotic

I mean in that sense, async communication doesn't really have an analog. Maybe "which section to take" in a class sequence? I think I agree with you but it's weird to think of it as such a departure.

in practice group chats often work synchronously though! nobody is conducting long async convos the value comes from when everyone jumps in at once, it's like running into your friends in the park except only the people in the chat can go to the park in the first place
