absolutely terrified by the tendency of some of my friends to fluidly make and unmake group chats with constantly changing, slightly different but overlapping subsets of the same 8-9 people it's impossibly chaotic

the only widely discussed pattern is the one where every big group chat inevitably spawns a smaller "core" chat of ~4 people which seems to be a stabilizing number but when people start making & unmaking every combination of 9 choose 5 or whatever oh my god there are no rules

I was thinking about this the other day in the context of etiquette (adding someone without group consent, etc) and events that overlap but not perfectly with the core group

yes! it's so fucking weird lmao i wish ephemeral/event-expiring group chats were a bigger thing i feel like having a more flexible structure as a default would help this a lot

Maybe it's like, which church service time was "the time" or somethin like that?
-
i think things like that (same school class, same church time) start as a random decision but get repeatedly reinforced by another external schedule or structure whereas a group chat starts randomly and is also self-reinforcing
