trying & failing to wrap my mind around the idea of the same tech people who complain about "witch hunts" enthusiastically supporting a thread singling out individual journalists for comments they made on twitter

the thing where vcs in control of millions of dollars bitch endlessly to their 150k twitter followers about how they're victimized by the tech press is so stupid it's insane

It’s almost as if people who have a platform and their main directive is to write true words... Are held to a high standard and criticized when their words are wildly untrue Crazy how that works

i think it's absolutely correct to criticize reporters when they incorrectly report facts but if i were gonna take that platform, i wouldn't post equally wildly untrue things like "reporter called everyone who advocated for prep a racist" when the screenshot literally says "he"pic.twitter.com/Rgyu5FMbLa

in general i think this attitude taken towards the tech press is fucking stupid like. if you believe their platform is important and they're reporting the wrong things, help them report the right things. if you don't believe their platform is important then ignore them

Or it’s possible to hold both in your head. Which is that the platform is important, but you also want to engage when you believe they have reported something factually incorrect Very appreciative of the shit bear writing the Uber book, I don’t agree with his conclusion...

that Travis should have been booted. But I am deeply appreciative of him taking the time to tell such a complicated story from all sides. That doesn’t stop me from wanting to also push back when I think he is making inaccurate statements

But yeah the *i hate tech press no matter what* stance is just as closed minded as the *all tech is evil* mindset

yeah you're right it's possible to hold both but that requires a level of nuance that isn't happening. like if you want correct reporting, you should accept that good reporters aren't gonna settle for PR statements, so maybe don't make them chase anon NDAed former employees

also that real grievances against legitimately incorrect reporting aren't gonna get taken seriously if you spend the rest of your time on twitter bitching about how people just don't like you, which is what a lot of tech ppl are doing all day rn
