It's not the responsibility of VC's to provide objective and unbiased reporting of the facts. It is the responsibility of the press to do that. So yeah, it's fair to critique people for not doing their job. Just like a SWE who sucks at PR can critique their CEO for sucking at it.

Stephanie is critiquing the *method* of the witch hunt. Sure, the SWE can critique a CEO for sucking at PR, but if they use ad hominems they sure should be ready for that *method* to be used against them.
