sometimes i think abt would you have had anything like the literature of the american west if they’d settled the colonies in california first and worked their way east. like take the pacific coast & utah & the rockies for granted and send explorers out to like.....virginia
the geography of the east is much older & thus less stereotypically dramatic i’m imagining an easy crossing of the appalachians, arriving at the soft sloping coast in the carolinas, creating a mythology of an enveloping & humid east. like going back to the womb
the great lakes would’ve been extremely crazy though. alternate universe lewis & clark writing back about a miraculous body of fresh water extending as far as the eye can see
