not surprising but still striking how basically none of the vcs talking about coronavirus have mentioned american healthcare costs in all their discussions of solutions measures

like nobody expects them to be all in for bernie or whatever but given their level of paranoid talk about public health & quarantine & viral transmission & "we were right to be worried" the lack of consideration for the state of the system is.....notable

"universal healthcare for virus-affected" is cute i sure hope he's including everyone who has to get tested & everyone who gets put under quarantine/monitoring because those cost money too and at that point that's basically just uhh universal healthcare

There was another tweet about just nationalizing health care that I can’t find.

yeah i will say i think balaji is generally ridiculous but at this point he’s tweeted so much about corona that he’s one of the few tech ppl finally getting close to the real problems

People talking about this were called hypochondriacs. But now it looks like Iran is at mass grave stage. To be clear, I have zero beef w/ you. I am just trying to understand a public health crisis. Perhaps we can do that as fellow citizens and be sarcastic after this is solved.pic.twitter.com/yV0MqCuoTQ

i think there’s a difference between talking about the epidemic that people have legitimately discussed as such since it came out and the early overreactions a lot of tech people came out with wrt their personal behaviors even before the virus had left hubei

there’s also a certain disparity between a lot of tech discussion as to how we sequence genomes or enable remote work or whatever and not how we make sure the people around us can afford to get tested and receive care

Both/and. Step 1 is recognizing it wasn't hypochondria. Then: 1) Remote work: necessary as public health measure 2)Sequencing genomes: at minimum, need to sequence *viral* genomes to understand strains: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank/sars-cov-2-seqs/ … 3) Healthcare: agree emergency action is neededpic.twitter.com/6ChEpDPQK2
