a good number of my irl friends follow me on twitter but never tweet themselves and i sometimes wonder if at some level they think that reading my tweets is us keeping up with each other even though it’s entirely unidirectional

I frequently forget this tbh! I follow someone for a while, think how smart and lovely they are and how swimmingly we're getting along, then I remember I mostly just read their feed and don't Tweet much personal stuff on mine so... whoops!
yeah i think it’s a pitfall of all broadcast-type social media, at least twitter is medium optimized for actual interaction as well w replies (vs instagram where i rarely go past a like)
