thinking everything from dopamine fasting to evopsych to even the popularity of workout classes — for which the argument i hear most isn’t “i do group workouts bc they’re fun”, it’s “i need someone yelling at me to work out and if i pay a membership that’ll force me to go more”

incentives are useful for systems i think but individuals are supposed to have coherency? slippery slope from using incentives as support tools to letting them take over whatever agency was there before

yeah i was talking to a friend abt this and like i totally understand using structure as a tool bc ofc we have limited time. but there must be Some things ur intrinsically motivated to do yet i feel like in sf these days for a lot of ppl i couldn't say what those things are
