mulling in some half-baked & untested thoughts abt how the tech person’s trend of analyzing & structuring everything in their life in terms of incentives boils down to a rly depressing lack of trust in human self

I get that’s not your intent, but just FYI, this is a line used to shame people with ADHD and it sucks to hear it. There are a lot of things I really care about that are hard to do because my brain has issues

yeah i thought about this and idk if this is selfish or insensitive of me but tbh it also feels shitty to have ppl coming in and decontextualizing 1 tweet out of 4 where i’m clearly trying to talk about a different generalized pattern

yeah i was talking to a friend abt this and like i totally understand using structure as a tool bc ofc we have limited time. but there must be Some things ur intrinsically motivated to do yet i feel like in sf these days for a lot of ppl i couldn't say what those things are

Motivation only really works for a while, and then it doesn't.

Consider that we live in a society where for 12+ years almost everyone is trained to do what is asked of them regardless of if they care or it needs to be done. And also trained not to even think about the category “what needs to be done” in any personal or rational way.

I think when ppl say they care, they actually mean they are intellectually interested. Not sufficient for genuine motivation. Not sure how this habit starts - maybe timidity when younger leads to fewer joyful somatic experiences.

A different angle: If you really cared about doing something repeatedly, wouldn't you make it as easy as possible to do? Maybe incentives are just tools to do this.
