wonder if it’s a cultural artifact ie the way chinese and lots of asian languages prefer usage of nicknames and titles for people

yeah i think that's why it's mostly unnatural for asians to use names: in indian culture calling anyone older than you by name is super-rude, and anyone younger its super-authoritarian, like teacher-student, so real names are mostly just for official shit
