for how much the internet was hyped as a driver of visual-first communication it is interesting that in the last few years meme culture seems to have moved back to twitter, a mostly text based medium

might just be my text brain talking but i feel like image/video memes inherently lack the context carrying capacity of text memes. like u can go viral for sure but the range & depth & versatility seems limited so far

Just missed the teen cutoff, but I’d say visual memes are still alive and well. Vine/Tik Tok type media will probably reincarnate itself once again if tik tok dies. Doomer memes are pretty visual and common on Twitter. Ur millennial is truly showing in this tweet

by doomer memes you mean the like "18yo zoomer" ones or whatever right isn't 90% of the semantic context in those conveyed via text? the wojaks don't do much by themselves

Other than the greater depth they communicate& more context to work with, the hurdle for making text memes seems lower; attractive and accessible for pretty much all ages vs. sumth like tiktok
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Tiktok is interesting in that the meme formats are based off the audio but the fill in the blank parts are still mostly text or sometimes visual. A true multimedia experience.
