As much fun it might be to bash on swdev being patchwork - your dad needs requirements that do not constantly change, or he would be as lost as many swdev projects. I do not agree that quality does not matter. But it is often compromised b‘cse of deadlines and management

There are industries, like building electronics or a bridge, where the requirements don’t change. We’ve trained management and clients to believe that software is easy to change, agile even, and now we live with the repercussions. Requirements change because we allow them to.

As a former mechanical and structural engineer now a software dev I often shake my head in total disbelief when comparing software “engineering” to my former profession. Night and day.

I used to write code for science simulations which usually had ONE chance to be ran. We didn't care about "ugly" code. All we cared about was accuracy and not breaking stuff lol. Then I came to regular software eng and we have to patch stuff daily because "deadlines" lol

As you said, the simulation code was throw away code, for single (and surely valuable) usage. Most software out there, however, is expected to change; then "beautiful" code has value. As @unclebobmartin says, code with bugs but easy to change >>> unchangeable perfect code.

move to FPGA-based hardware development and create the worst of both worlds! 😀

Chips are full of bugs that are remedied by compilers and sw. I too built hardware and now write software. Both are incredibly difficult to do well and it does no one any good to belittle the work we all do.
