by far the highlight of the away article is that the company's head of people, who as far as i can tell from google images looks exactly like any other white woman, "identifies as a person of color"

i understand that it's possible to look white while being mixed race and ex. having family who look obviously not white, but a huge part of race has to do with the way you are perceived and to be ignorant of that enough to say you "identify as a person of color" is just dumb

wading into stuff i know v little about but quick note i feel the native case is interesting bc for historical reasons a lot of the people that are legit closest & most committed to their native ancestors' culture are ppl that "look white" and it's a much finer balance

there's also the flipside that a *lot* of Americans claim some native heritage, which is problematic both because: - they have no ties with the claimed heritage - If you're going far back enough not all native parents were .... willing this particular one is super tricky

precisely fear of accidentally doing this is pretty much why i rarely identify as a POC (I'm Indian-American) because 99% of the time even if I do "count" the thing in question is not for my benefit, and "POC" is being used as a stand-in for more complex privilege dynamics

yup same tangentially re: complex dynamics i feel like an underlying reason why a lot of tech ppl get rly up in arms abt discussions on privilege is bc it’s a hugely complex system that resists simplification and they hate that
