by far the highlight of the away article is that the company's head of people, who as far as i can tell from google images looks exactly like any other white woman, "identifies as a person of color"

a huge part, but not the entirety of. I agree that claiming to be a “person of color” with less melanin is a stretch, but this excludes white-passing multiracial people from any category in the discussion. white privileged and cultural identity are not the same thing.
-
no i agree with you, although it's not just about melanin etc but we both know we are using imperfect shorthand for things. your looks/your privilege/how you experience racism/the cultures you identify with are all different but in this case phrasing "i'm a poc" is kind egregious

wading into stuff i know v little about but quick note i feel the native case is interesting bc for historical reasons a lot of the people that are legit closest & most committed to their native ancestors' culture are ppl that "look white" and it's a much finer balance

bruh i think my 2 non-white sides combined to race overflow, wrapping around to make me forget that i'm actually not white

100% agree. As a white-passing Hispanic person, I never use the term POC to describe myself, and I certainly wouldn’t use it as a defense in this context.
-
But on the other hand, we don’t know if Erin Grau even talked to the reporter, most likely someone else supplied this information on her behalf and perhaps she used the term originally in a less offensive context

Big realization for me when I realized that while race was socially constructed the same group of people was doing a pretty large amount of the constructing. Pretty sure “Asian people” didn’t become a commonly understood category because of a person from Asia.
