i understand that it's possible to look white while being mixed race and ex. having family who look obviously not white, but a huge part of race has to do with the way you are perceived and to be ignorant of that enough to say you "identify as a person of color" is just dumb

race and white-passing-ness are not necessarily related either. genetics are strange, and especially in america 2019 we have many mixes. my understanding of PoC is more of a racial heritage, including culture. humans can be completely pale but have no caucasian white ancestry.

Ah, sorry! Was continuing on the earlier discussion train. I think Iranian people count as people of color, yet my use of the term is definitely looser. In the US it's contextualized to primarily mean people of African-American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic racial decent.

this seems largely due to a history of slavery and colonialism, which perpetuates today as racism. which is interesting, because there are other cultures, e.g. filipinos, who underwent centuries of colonialism but are considered "asian" and therefore not racial minorities
