personally instead of actually refactoring python functions to cover new use cases, i like to just add params with None defaults for perfect backwards compatibility,

You have maximum 256 parameters to a python function. If you do what you are suggesting then you ll eventually be out of parameters. Better is to use an interface which the two functions can implement :)

Anybody sane starts using **kwargs after they get up to a dozen parameters so 256 is plenty generous.
