this is all anecdotal and in the specific context of women but i know a lot of girls who did fbu or google ep as freshmen and then just keep coming back year after year bc taking the return offer is easier than putting urself thru recruiting season

obviously this makes sense on the company’s end bc they’ve already invested in training u and return interns save them on onboarding time and recruiting costs

and if tech wasn’t always open to u and/or ur primary goal is a well paying stable job with name recognition (which is not a bad goal to have) then maybe this works. but if u wanna rly explore & advance in the industry it kinda hurts u to use up valuable intern opps on returns

the longer u keep taking return offers the more ur interview skills suffer and the more daunting it looks to put urself back out there and meanwhile there are higher paying jobs out there w more opps for advancement that u could be taking if u wanted

special mention goes to fbu for only offering an ios/android program and locking year after year of baby freshmen into 3 mobile internships so they can graduate without any experience in cloud systems or front end or whatever else they might one day be interested in doing

They're machines for getting folks to E5. Hopefully that correlates with becoming a well rounded engineer with a satisfying career ahead of them.

can only speak from what i’ve heard but i have friends who are a few years into their fb careers and who regret not trying out more companies while they were students and had the flexibility bc now they have no clue how to interview anywhere else
