some open offices are better than others (e.g. fb building 21 where u can see rows and rows of desks for eternity is super depressing) and maybe it is bc i am young and stupid and don't know better but i fail to see how the alternatives are better

yeah i think this is key! a good mix of shared space, meeting rooms, and lil pods where u can work without distractions or like, idk personally i hate when people can see what's on my screen https://twitter.com/clowbrow/status/1179543955215544320?s=20 …

i love the dynamics of different spatial divisions — unclear how i feel abt just 2 people in a room but e.g. our office does a good job i think of managing space/sightlines/noise w distribution of couch areas w desks, plant placement etchttps://twitter.com/PatrickHyatt/status/1179542635842822144?s=20 …

Based on my experiences with open vs alternatives, the best option so far has been offices (or rooms) with 2-3 people per room. Barrage of people walking in/around/out is minimal, but can close the door and all isolate into your work if needbe.

my personal take on cubicles is that they don't do much for privacy/noise isolation (i'd still want headphones) but now u can't see anything either. reminds me of one year when i had a roommate in a 2br who never really talked but was Always There....awfulhttps://twitter.com/radiocolin/status/1179544754138357765?s=20 …

I enjoyed having cubicles. I had plenty of places to put my stuff, I wasn’t fully isolated, and the walls provided a nice amount of sound dampening.

2 people in a room is the worst of all. I've never done it but i know I'd want to kill my coworker by lunch time of the first day.

my personal hell would be getting stuck in a room with just one smelly dude with a mechanical keyboard and a semi stuffed nose he can't be bothered to clear so it whistles every time he breathes

I think your office probably isn't what most people who hate open offices are thinking of. I bet if more offices were designed like the one you described people probably wouldn't hate them so much
