personally i am fascinated when i myself receive "diversity hire"-type comments because in nearly all respects i am a perfectly generic east asian software engineer with a wealthy & highly educated family background and degrees from a "top cs school"

I think for a lot of insecure guys, there’s a “sweet spot” that they want women to fit into—smart enough to fetishize, but not so smart as to threaten their own identity.

When they parrot the “diversity hire” line, it’s their way to force you just to the left of that rightmost boundary.

Might be that said dumb-ass is simply afraid of your talent? The same being valid wrt to any other unjustifiably criticised "minority person" in tech. People are afraid of anything unusual that puts them out of their comfort zone, I guess, just like e.g. racism spread out.
