yeah, no legacy is 100% better for an educational institute. it makes a huge difference that MIT *never* had legacy admissions, and very intentionally so. it's one of things that's easier to keep doing if that's how you always did things

(on the other hand, other issues with modern college admissions don't just go away when you nix legacy... and these debates are both more complex and more controversial)

their only tangible excuse is just that it makes them more money, legacy admissions hold no water at all from an educational outcomes perspective. private institutes are still businesses, they preserve their brand only insofar as it preserves their finances
