Ahh so that's the secret. Traveled with my black friend through Europe. Side by side checking into shared hotel rooms with our US passports, they'd ask me: Konnichiwa, Japanese? And her: Senegal?

I was speaking to a group of people from the US yesterday and having a productive conversation about the differences in the independent music scenario in both countries. 5 mins into the conversation: "How do you speak English so well?" :')
-
you can get the same reaction in the US, even if you're born in the US, but the code word people will use to describe you is "eloquent." their facial expression will say OMG A TALKING BEAR!!!!

German border police asks me with attitude "you know English?" I say," yes" and whisper " probably much better than you" Same cop smiles at my white husband and says "Welcome to Germany"
