the slow death of snapchat makes me so sad ugh there is no equivalently low friction way of sharing real life stupid shit with friends, like the closest feel is tagging ppl in memes on facebook except on snapchat the content was better/more relatable bc it was literally your life

streak/bff system rewarded actual frequency of communication (tho the Teens went to ridic lengths to game it); simplicity of edit tools + early caps on caption length made for a low maintenance feel even once stories/broadcast came out

insta DM's snap feature sucks (but maybe the teens are on it?). insta stories feel more vanity/"brand"-focused (prettier filters, larger audience). for casual sharing everyone i know is regressing back to texting, incl even for one-off pics that now just fill up space in my phone

bc snapchat didn't start out w/ broadcast/follow structure, there was always some friction in adding people—a good thing! kept it in this sweet spot of 2way private chat + medium-scale broadcast. now an empty space. insta's trying to fill w/"close friends" but adoption seems slow

anyways now i feel stuck in this mode of either texting existing group chats or posting cute insta stories to hundreds of ppl i'm not close with for my Brand and neither of these things are really Fun

i've had snapchat since 2012. my snap score (snaps sent + received) is 44,266 which among my friends is mid-high but def not the highest. that comes out to >17 snaps per day! hours spent in-app! but ~friendship~ is hard to monetize and "personal brand" broadcast is easy. the end
