putting the “IDEO” in “weird cultlike ideology that somehow nobody else has come up with? really?”

Ppl should actually embrace design thinking MORE...sure its processes can be overkill but it's the way of *thinking* that is not obvious to most & in a sense, magical. The biggest problem with it is getting buy-in from ppl, bc it's best done with an obnoxiously positive mindset
-
idk i think it kinda says something about people here that basic consideration for their users isn’t an obvious way of thinking to them

Sorry this is completely wrong. I too am annoyed by most ‘design thinkers’ and the cult around IDEO and the http://d.school .... but skilled (trained) needfinding is rare in most governments, foundations, and corporations, and the consequent waste and failure, massive.
-
tbh we are probably on the same page here — totally agree that user research is vital, that good design is hard, and that people w/relevant experience are needed across lots of fields. don’t think obsessive process and buzzwords are gonna magically make it happen though

I’ve also led design sprints for major corporations outside of SV who have wasted millions because they decided to develop a product that nobody wanted. Empathy is a good place to start though.

Exactly. You may see it as non obvious
@isosteph but the majority of companies/employees do not. Most things that need to be fixed with orgs/products are the very basics.

I found this hilarious coming from industrial design to tech - that ideas like talking to your users could be at all radical
Presenter: "understand who you're building for"
*Audience bursts into applause* -
That said - 'design thinking' is given a lot of lip service, but I often see it done poorly. Two reasons that I see: 1) Lack of understanding of *good*, methodically rigorous user research 2) User research / product design aren't given weight in sales or marketing driven co's
