There are two fundamental problems with this. First, if you are going to rely on the discretionary nature of impeachment (as Alexander, Rubio and others seem to), it’s hard to justify not getting a full picture of the facts, even if the basic outline seems clear.

Second, if you acknowledge that the House’s allegations are true, you necessarily acknowledge that the president is putting forth a false version of the facts and concealing the evidence that would expose his mendacity. Refusing to demand the evidence condones this conduct.

If this were a civil case it'd be ripe for (partial) summary judgment: no genuine issue as to any material fact. Only issue is remedy (if any).

I could agree if the facts were formally stipulated or if CJ Roberts made findings of fact approved by the full Senate, as in summary judgment, but without either, Trump and GOP officeholders will continue to deny the facts and insist that he was exonerated.
