I've been saying for years the actual terms of the port deal show absolutely no proof of "debt trap diplomacy". This is yet more evidence the Times story, which was used to justify high-level US policy and fueled endless accusations of "Chinese colonialism," was a pack of lies.

SNC-Lavalin is pretty corrupt though, so don't put too much stock in that report.

I'm not putting any stock into the report. The Times claimed no feasibility studies indicated the project would have favorable returns, and we now know at least two did.

Per west, if there was no business interest fulfilled, then there is no reasonable yet much needed global south collaboration. The only approval needed to help another poor nation to advance itself is the “financial feasibility” uncovered by fancy consultants.

Through the history of the capitalism, how many times the NYT warned the world the corrupted/greedy wall street financial schemes would lead the world to economic shitholes again and again? Is the wall street gamble feasible?

The term also meant China was now a member of the Imperial Club, and had a right to befuddle smaller and emerging nations, who could not understand a feasibility study. There was an enormous amount of racism and elitism rolled up into that meme.
