Here are a few more (less ironic) examples of the same sort of exclusionary design from around my neighbourhood. Most of these are deliberate choices by the city.

So they're supposed to make benches without arms or hand-grips for elderly people or others with balance/mobility issues? Although I don't think the bench in 3rd photo helps anything (the "arms" are too low if you need them for stability), but arms/rails aren't always "hostile".

If you really want to delve into exclusionary design you should look into the development of the parkway system in nyc. Only the super wealthy had cars back then

Another exclusionary feature is making the edges of raised planters, etc, at a steep angle (rather than flat) to discourage people from sitting on them.
The entrance to GGP at Haight/Stanyan is a great example.

Yeah, holy shit. Can’t believe they don’t want transients sleeping on their benches. Just like I don’t want my neighbors to have 15 “parts” cars.

ah now i understand, your point is that this designs affect homeless people...i don't think the cities are designed around creating spaces for the homeless to sleep, and the point should be to create affordable places not comfortable to sleep benches.

But these are designed deliberately to prevent them from sleeping. It's targeted and malicious.
