Here are a few more (less ironic) examples of the same sort of exclusionary design from around my neighbourhood. Most of these are deliberate choices by the city.
Taking the bench away won’t make things better. The space is also in need of more benches. The people who run it take donations at http://springboardperformance.com/containr/.
So they're supposed to make benches without arms or hand-grips for elderly people or others with balance/mobility issues? Although I don't think the bench in 3rd photo helps anything (the "arms" are too low if you need them for stability), but arms/rails aren't always "hostile".

Another exclusionary feature is making the edges of raised planters, etc, at a steep angle (rather than flat) to discourage people from sitting on them.
The entrance to GGP at Haight/Stanyan is a great example.
