Here are a few more (less ironic) examples of the same sort of exclusionary design from around my neighbourhood. Most of these are deliberate choices by the city.pic.twitter.com/fqEtbAHI0y
Ultimately we need to house the homeless. In the meantime, help! @alphahouseyyc @HorizonYYC @BStraffordCentr
Taking the bench away won’t make things better. The space is also in need of more benches. The people who run it take donations at http://springboardperformance.com/containr/ .
Omg issac you're twitter famous
I'm cackling
Hate the poor? Can someone explain?
The “arm rests” are only there to prevent homeless people from sleeping on benches.
Oh my fucking god. You legit made me gasp out loud. I never realized this. Ok, I have to go sit down and think about how evil we've become as a society.
They even put up bike racks to block off areas to prevent tents from being used. Once you notice how hostile modern cities have become you can’t stop seeing it. Spikes everywhere, and not for pigeons.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWZLB8CyPbM&sns=tw …
I knew about "anti-homeless architecture" with the spikes but I had no idea these bench dividers are a part of it. So gross.
Yes, because sitting in a park is much more necessary to living than sleep.
Anti-skateboarder measure??
They're to stop homeless people sleeping on them. Even if they're billed as "anti-skateboard" that's very much not their real purpose.
ever thought about old people who need something to hold on to to get up and down? Pretty sure it's rather for them then against homeless people slepping there.
I know about that, but I don't see it here necessarily. Those have a real value to old and disabled people with e.g. back issues. Not everything is anti-something, sometimes the value is just not as obvious, when you're not affected by it.
There’s always one in 10k that doesn’t see it. Back issues?
I do see that it could be the case, I simply also see a different reason for those benches to be built like this.
