I won't attend another Linux foundation event unless they decide to distribute more of the wealth into the hands of contributors who could actually use it.

They were overblown vendor events anyways so it's not like I'm actually missing out

Do open source without a foundation. It's SO easy. You just do it.

Contributors, honestly what has the Linux foundation done for you. Because I can tell you they have never done anything for me.

And the Apache Foundation is managing 350 projects as opposed to one for the Linux Foundation. Executive compensation in charities has long been a scandal. It's not terribly surprising that yet another one has gone that route.

I hesitate to wade into this discussion, but it's worth noting that Apache is 501c3, LF is 501c6. So they have very different goals and are able / unable to do different things.

As a trade organization, LF began its life to promote Linux commercially - trade shows, marketing, etc. that benefit members (e.g. corporations) that they weren't doing singularly. Also to protect the Linux TM. The LF, for better or worse, has expanded its mission by a lot.

The Linux Foundation may be a trade association in practice, but they don't describe themselves that way on their website and they still solicit donations and sell individual memberships. (Though the individual members no longer have voting rights.)

In any case, legal restrictions are beside the point. The point of the comparison is that Linux Foundation executives get paid more for less achievement than the Apache Foundation executives.

Well, yes... but that's comparing apples & oranges. LF runs dozens of high profile events, creates training programs, spends a _lot_ of time on PR, etc. where ASF... doesn't.

I'm not sure that individual memberships is a strike against being a trade org, but I'd agree that their "About" copy doesn't scream "trade foundation".
