The net result is that there are a ton of people investing (smartly) in the specific companies, but very few people hedging any risk or placing bets in the opposite direction. I’d bet there are more people margin trading than buying put options.

The underlying assumption in that view is that people make bad decisions because of a knowledge gap, and education (enter your email for this 40 page PDF / sales brochure) is the answer. I think it’s a convenience gap. People could learn options math, it’s just a PITA.

The canonical view is “all retail investors are dumb and should just buy index funds and ETFs managed by roboadvisors”. Maybe right in the aggregate, but personal experience and growth of @RobinhoodApp (and others) suggests otherwise.

I would love to see a consumer product that let people get broad, distributed exposure to put options for specific companies, without needing such specialized knowledge, similar to how inverse ETFs allow for this exposure for a sector or index.

At ~$3000 per contract for 2022 put options, a non-trivial amount of money is also required. At these prices, fractional exposure to options contracts seems much more helpful than fractional shares, which are becoming popular.

A ton of knowledge is required to do this even semi-competently, especially if you want to hedge well, or have an ongoing long-term view but aren’t targeting a specific date. BYO spreadsheet.

Example: I’m short $cost. Their membership value depends so heavily on subsidized gasoline, Amazon is growing, and houses/households are shrinking. And meanwhile their share price is growing because sales are strong and big structural changes haven’t yet hit.

Giving people control over their data means giving people access and tools. All the discussion around GDPR is about consent, deletion, and compliance. But the important part is allowing people to use their own data, move it between services, and make sense of it.
