The issue is there has been a shift in the american mindset, seen throughout our education system, that government has the ability to create wealth and fairness, by forcing (via taxes and user fees) its redistribution. It is flawed thinking, proven many times by history.
It is compounded by the fact there there are no constitutional limits to taxation. Today, almost 38% of every dollar in our GDP is spent by government (federal, state, and local). Yet, the career bureaucrats and politicians always need a little more. There is no spend limit.
