Perhaps. I was lucky to be born in an educated middle class family that supported learning, and then always lucky to meet the right people at the right time to provide opportunities. Was effort relevant? Sure. I worked my ass off. But that isn't nearly enough without much luck

Also, I've been lucky to be quite healthy all my life. And even if that hadn't been the case, I was lucky grow up in a country that provides high quality tax-funded healthcare to everyone. So yes: effort is a necessary condition. But not a sufficient one. Luck is a huge factor
