An addendum to this: we both found the Auschwitz exhibition currently at in NYC through August to be a more appropriate, historically grounded memorial to the camp. Worth your time if you can go. (When we visited, the crowds were utterly silent.)

This illustrated account of the Auschwitz memorial will teach you more about what happened to Poland's Jews than the official tour, which minimizes the complicity of the Polish people in the slaughter of Jews, and instead centers the 10% of the camp's victims who were not Jewish.
