  1. Shout out to the brain genius who smashed out my window and didn't even bother to take the $10 bill in the glovebox 😂😂😂

Honorable mention for the iron resolve of whatever titan traversed the entirety of Wikimedia Commons to populate this category

In awe at the courage of the hero who released a photo of, presumably, THEIR OWN FRIDGE into the public domain to illustrate the Wikipedia article on food poisoning

The internal combustion engine is a terrible piece of tech. The fact we produce and operate it at scale is the highest feat of humanity.

Sorry! But don't give up hope. Maybe next week the news cycle will involve a thing I have some reason to know lots about. Then I'll post about it!

I don't think it's unimportant, I just don't have an interesting or novel or knowledgeable enough opinion for it to be worth shouting to the entire planet

when you start a huge script but you forgot to set the flag enabling verbose output so you have to just sit there for 10 minutes looking at a blank terminal window and hoping it didn't hang

Everybody needs this, but imo nobody needs it more than kids. Kids are so used to being pushed around, told what to do, being treated as incomplete humans on probation. Give kids your sincere, attentive curiosity and you will change their lives 5eva Also kids are fascinating!!!

I think making fun of someone's name is a chickenshit thing to do, unless they picked it out for themselves, and maybe even then.

I guess you need to do lots of complicated math equations if you want to get precise numbers about things. But this is true of everything. If you don't need precise numbers, you can usually ignore the squiggly things!

Anyway, this is how diffraction works. Nerds will always tell you that you need to do lots of complicated math equations to understand stuff. I don't think this is true.

And the reason it "bends around" a thing is because the other part of the wave (i.e. the rest of the "wavefront") gets stopped by the thing and isn't waving forward with it, so it isn't keeping the beam from waving arseways off to the side

The reason a beam of light can go straight is the same reason waves in water can go straight: each point where it waves forward is surrounded by an assload of other points where it's also waving forward in sync, so that energy doesn't have anywhere to radiate off sideways to.

So the thing going on is that the thing you still think of, intuitively, as a ray (even though you kinda know "it's a wave") isn't a ray. It's a wave lol! A wave can travel along a line, but at every point along that line it waves out to the sides. Energy goes in all directions.

This might seem crazy, but it isn't. Like, how weird it would be if waves in water worked that way? This image would show a completely still lagoon with a little line of waves going straight back from the hole and... somehow not interacting with the rest of the water? Crazy.
