tip: replace "developers", etc with "the people that we've hired" e.g. "the people that we've hired are bad at talking to users"

the #1 thing the native platform tools are going to have to improve to compete in the the new RAD space is distribution getting something in front of folk sooner has to be much, much simpler than it is at the moment

I feel like I’ve increasingly been having this conversation over the last decade and both developers and designers are regularly annoying as heck re what they consider people do (really about what *they* do) - which often seriously constrains what a team is capable of

here’s the thing: if you’re from a CS or a SW engineering background, it’s likely that UI, UX, HCI, UCD, etc weren’t taught alongside the tech aspect at all yet there are other backgrounds *where it is taught* as part of designing and building things for people

i.e. you’ll never even see them, because they’ll have picked up on what your environment is like

the reason you can’t hire these “unicorns” is that you have a design silo and a “development” silo *they won’t work with you because they won’t be doing design work*

reading yet another design silo piece that seems blind to the elephant in the room: 👉 if the “developers” you keep othering don’t have even the most basic UI skills, then WHY ON EARTH ARE THEY WORKING ON UI? have you considered why you can’t hire these (sic) “unicorns”?

I’d much rather see UX design coaches than the endless debating about who is and isn’t a designer

the thing is, the people who build prototypes are the people who build prototypes - they’re prototype builders or “prototypers” yet we are obsessed with our identity silos and “who does what” - 'cause if you don’t have one of these identities… what are you? where’s your tribe?

    > so are people who use SQL developers? *confusion* “well X uses SQL and they're not a developer so no” > but SQL is a programming language? *confusion* “it’s a special case" > what about python? *confusion* “well X uses python and they're not a developer” > … *confusion*

tool used by designers gets prototyping features added -> designers are now the people who build prototypes tool used by developers gets prototyping features added -> developers are now the people who build prototypes

Been saying for years that you can directly link Britain’s democratic immaturity and self-harm to the fact that the Brits never toppled feudalism.

i.e. the thing that might be an attractor in a positive direction over here, might be an attractor in a negative direction over here and a positive attractor over here might seem like sci-fi / that-could-never-work-here over here

the trouble with saying something like "the group is composed of a BA, a developer and a tester”: while in highly role siloed environments its likely better, in more whole team environments you’re using the frame of reference from the more siloed environment (thus evoking it)
